Affiliate Programs for Profit
November 6th, 2005If you have been longing to start a business online you may be coming across terms you’ve never heard before. You may also have found the opportunities available are overwhelming. Where do you begin? AFFILIATE PROGRAMS - EASY START Affiliate programs may be the easiest online business to start running. Why? With any online business you must have a product or service to sell. First you must create this product or service and then you must be able to fill orders. Selling your own product or service also means creating a website, learning how to write ad copy, setting up a marketing plan, being able to accept payments online and obviously doing the work. If you’re selling a physical product then you will need to make or buy the item, package it and pay for shipping costs. If you provide a service than you will likely have to start by doing free jobs to build your credibility and then when you are charging for your service you are still limited by how much work you can actually handle. THE MAGIC OF AFFILIATE PROGRAMS Affiliate programs are a great way to get started in an online business. In fact there are even some ‘Super Affiliates’ who are making fabulous incomes from affiliate programs. So, what ARE affiliate programs? Affiliate programs allow you to sell another company’s service or product and make a commission on every sale or lead. You do not even need to build a website or handle the transaction. Your job is to drive traffic (customers) to your affiliate link. An affiliate link is a special URL code that will identify customers coming to the company’s site from your advertising. It will likely be the website address with a code attached to the end. Some affiliate programs also have tiers. That means if someone who is interested in SELLING the product comes through your link and signs up you will also get a small percentage of THEIR earnings. HOW DO I CHOOSE A PROGRAM? You should research the popularity of some of your interests. Try to determine if people are buying that product or service online. There are many sources for finding that information including free ones such as the Overture keyword tool. When you have found an area that is popular then type the subject along with ‘affiliate program’ into your search engine and see which programs have services or products for that area. You can also use an affiliate program directory. When you have found a program that looks interesting you should read the terms of the program. Make sure that payouts are not based on a high commission earning or you may never see your money. Also try to choose programs with high commission rates. Often you will find ebooks and downloadable software has the highest rates as there is no physical product to make or ship. If you are satisfied with the terms then you need to sign up - usually a simple process. START MARKETING The reason affiliate programs are so great for beginners is that you only need to focus on marketing - not making - your product. Many affiliate programs have information on how to market and give you tools such as banners, product feeds and more. You can also look for other information on marketing including writing articles, creating pay-per-click campaigns, commenting in online forums etc. As you gain experience marketing you will make adjustments to your selling and start creating a wonderful income!
Selling Information
November 6th, 2005If you have been researching or involved in online business for very long, you have no doubt seen a multitude of offers for “eBooks”, books, reports and training course on every subject imaginable. Why? Because information is the hottest product on the market! (At the foundational level, it’s actually the Only product, but that’s another article.) Information cuts straight to the root of all selling, which is answering the customer’s question: “What will this product do for me?” There’s another reason, though. Pure information is a product that doesn’t require a huge financial overhead to produce, (other than the hard knocks you got in gaining the experience and information), and is easy and relatively low cost to deliver to the customer. That is what makes it such a great product for us, as entrepreneurs, to offer. Everyone has life experience, training, and skills that others don’t have. Everyone knows something that others want to know, or can do something that others want to learn. That’s how I know you have an InfoProduct inside you, everyone does. Your first assignment is to decide which of your many gifts you are going to offer to the world! Does that mean you have to be able to write a book? No. Not necessarily. I’m talking about what is known as USP…Unique Selling Position. Your USP might be that you have detailed knowledge about someone else’s product that you are selling as an affiliate. It could be that humorous way you present the information you have collected on some subject of interest, or the fact that you offer the best customer service available for the service you offer. You may offer the same products that others are also selling, but find your own unique market for them. But whatever you decide to use for your information product, your USP, you need to find one. If you were to research the online marketers who are honestly making the money they claim to be earning online, you would discover that they all have a USP. Your USP IS your product, however you package and deliver it. If you are working a Multi-level Marketing program or one of the BIBs (Business in a Box), you are not left out of this concept, but you may have to work harder to figure out how to be unique. You can still go for the niche marketing idea. Find a group of people who aren’t usually reached by these kinds of businesses, or aim your advertising at people in the countries that are just now going online. You may, of course, actually write a book, eBook, or training course and sell it. Many are making good money doing just that. The list of helpful software and online publishers is growing every day. But even if you write your own product or design your own software, you will still need a well-thought-out USP to stand out in the crowd. It’s like your business plan — you need a firm foundation before you can build your future online success.
Show me the Money
November 6th, 2005In 1996, in the movie Jerry McGuire, actor Cuba Gooding, Jr. made famous the phrase Show Me the Money! Ten years later, avariation of that command, now Show Me the Data!rings in conference rooms throughout the country. Managers far and wide, at least the successful ones, are looking at the data. Donttell me your opinion, show me the data. Can you back it up with data? If you cant measure it, you cant manage it. Companies may be able to survive for a while if managers arent using data to make decisions, but they will eventually see their demise; likelysooner than later. Those companies to benchmark off are the ones who are not only surviving, but thriving! Pick your favorite phrase: TQM, Process Management, Quality Circles, Improvement Teams, Standards and Measurement departments or any other title you prefer. The function is the same. Look at baseline data percentages, dollars, hours, quantities and continuously monitor the performance. There should not be any task that a supervisor or staff members perform that cannot be measured. If you cant measure it, you cant manage it. Take a fast food restaurant for example. There are a plethora of areas that can be measured such as days without an accident, customer wait time in line, length of time burgers are in the warmer, amount of money off in the drawers, customer complaints, etc. Graph it out and keep a spread sheet of your figures. Clearly youre looking for improvement. If there was a decline, brainstorm, find the root cause and then fix the problem. The process is the same no matter what industry youre managing.Whether you manufacture widgets, if you are the CEO of an internet marketing firm or if you sell cookies, take a look at all the steps involved in day to day operations. Assign values to the process. Set goals. Review the results on a daily, weeklyor monthly basis. Remember, if you cant measure it, you cant mange it. Charts and graphs are an excellent tool to visually remind you of where you have been and where you plan to go. In the midst of measuring your subordinates performance, dont neglect to measure and manage your own operations. Dont think for a minute that your boss isnt looking at your performance. And if you are the top dog, you had better be managing yourself well, or you will never succeed at managing others.
Offline Advertising
November 6th, 2005Many people jump into online business enterprises and neglect real-world or offline advertising opportunities to grow their operations. A good mix of offline ads with your online campaignis good strategic planning. It helps present your message and even reinforce it for those who have already spotted your online presence. Plus you can target people who have Internet access and email capabilities by remembering to add your URL or web site address and / or your e-mail, autoresponder or ezine subscription address in all of your promotions. To make the most of your offline advertising, here are a few tipsfrom the pros:
1. COMPUTER RELATED When placing print classified or displayads targeting a website, target magazines that have a computerrelated section for your ad, when possible. This will helpattract people with Internet access and email.
2. LISTS Purchase or rent postal mailing lists and set upregular direct mail campaigns. If you make sure the lists include email addresses, youll be able to cross promote via email andknow they probably have Internet access, too, to help draw themto your site.
3. COMMERCIAL SPOTS Check into commercial spots on local cable television. Pricing ranges vary, and you could get a bargain early morning spot & catch business people who are early risers. Target your campaign around shows that feature Internet use /computers, too, when you can. See about being in the same spotjust before or after a regularly scheduled program to target the same readers over and over, so that theyll commit your site to memory and click it on.
4. DECKS / MAILERS - Advertise with other businesses in card decks or direct mail packages. Check to make sure they are targeted for your audience.
5. EVENT MARKETING Create a CD-ROM, disk or DVD about yourwebsite, products and services. And distribute them at trade shows, workshops and other special events. Note: Have yourcontact information and website on the cover in case the items do not function right when installed.
6. FREEBIES - Give away free pens, pencils, mouse pads, notepads, yellow stickies, etc. that carry your website on them andcontact information. Put your advertising on the mouse pads andgive them away at computer or internet events. So reach out and advertise offline to compliment your onlinestrategy. And remember to include your URL or web site addressand / or your e-mail, autoresponder or ezine subscription addressin all of your promotions
Content Management Systems
November 6th, 2005One of the most innovative benefits of the dynamic web programming is the content management system, which makes the life of the Internet content editors easy and their work visually attractive. Imagine you are the editor of an online newspaper or a magazine. Alternatively, you need to create a dictionary website. You are creative in your writings and very knowledgeable about the content you write about. However, these skills alone are not good enough to be able to work in an online news source. You have to have at least the very basic knowledge on the functions and the tags of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). You have to be able to create codes for the presentations of your articles. I know that this process of writing web articles can be really frustrating and exhausting if you have never heard about CMSs (Content Management Systems). Content Management Systems are almost like your personal automated web page authors. You write your articles, puts polls, surveys, rating systems as if you are using a word processor or a visual editing program. Driven by the data you put in, the CMS stores all of these in a database and then translates them into HTML. CMS basically acts like a translator between you and the browsers by creating very user friendly graphical interfaces. CMS generally have a front-end and a back end. The front-end obviously refers to the face of the site that each visitor sees. However, back end is the user-friendly graphical interface where you can edit your content or the template with the help of the many wizards that are supplied by these systems. Lets say you needed to write a code for a user-upload function in the site, or a survey system that would enable the users to vote on your articles; you dont need even to touch Dreamweaver, Frontpage, or any kind of HTML editor; there are already hundreds of modules that are written for different CMSs. You just go and download the module to your server and install it. There are loads of CM systems online that are presented as freeware. However, below are two suggestions for different user groups; Typo3: If you think yourself a professional and think that you can deal with some PHP coding, this robust and very flexible system is just for you. Mambo: If you say No, thanks. I dont want to deal with PHP coding, I am doing this as a hobby, then Mambo should be your choice since it does not let the user to change much and is already supported by many ready-to-install modules and templates. In summary, CMS makes our life much more easier then before and our sites much more attractive. They are the operating systems, personal coders and free translators of the web sites.
Efectively Closing the Sale
November 6th, 2005Telling a story or sharing product and service information is fine in an ad. But the bottom line is that you want to close a sale. The difference in ad copy doesnt have to be earth shattering. It can be very slight, in fact. Here are ways to make your ad a little more effective come closing time.
1. TESTS Make public knowledge the results of your product and service testing. Share how your items stand up against the competition; how durable they are, how safe. Discuss the quality and unique features. Let people know why they should choose your items. And present the material in a professional way with statistics, graphs, before and after photos or other graphic images and a well-written report or case study documented.
2. YOU While youre at it, let them know why they should choose you! Dont hide behind a P.O. Box and Yahoo email address. Add your background information, a nice executive resume, testimonials from clients, work samples, community involvement projects, industry awards, educational courses you continue to take for self improvement, workshops and seminars you attend, etc. let people know who you are. Add a nice, professional photograph of yourself, too, if you like.
3. CHARITY Tie in a percentage of your sales with one of your favorite charities. And make mention of this in your ad copy. This is a win-win strategy because your company gives back to society plus your clients read about it; it improves your image in their eyes and shares your concerns. And they give, too. Everyone helps each other.
4. GUARANTEE Include a good, solid guarantee in your offer. For examples, look at the last thing you purchased and check out the guarantee. In a nutshell, make it a lifetime offer and / or give them back MORE than they gave you.
5. PS Since most people look for this feature, add it! Say something in your P.S. like give them a Bonus offer if they reply by a certain deadline. Or focus on your best reason why the reader should buy and NOW.
6. CONTACT Do include complete contact information that works! Test any email addresses and telephone numbers before going to press So next time you need to ace your ad copy, go back over what you wrote and tweak it here and there for improvements. Better yet, have a contest and invite your readers to do it for you! Hows that for a win-win solution?!
Surfers using Google or Alexa
November 5th, 2005Many surfers use the Google or Alexa bar that integrates into their web browsers, which consequently makes it easier for them to search and navigate through Internet. However, how many have the overall page rank indicator on these bars which shows either aranking or the importance of the page? The overall page rank in directories like Google, Yahoo or Alexais the key factor while doing a search. It decides which website or page deserves the top places in the results of the search of a keyword.
The search engine basically calculates the importance of the webpage. For example, lets say that you prepared a webpage supplying the users with focused, detailed and understandable info. You think your page deserves a high importance, therefore when you searchfor the theme of your website, you believe it should be shown in the top 20. Well, sometimes life is cruel. If you dont optimize your webpage for a specific keyword, if you dont get enough in-bound links directing the user to your site, you would be disappointed by the 1/10 importance rating in Google.
Dont giveup! Its still worth fighting for. There are several factors which decide the page rank of a website. First of all, Internet is not like the streets of a city: if you put your shop in a busy street, people will drop by your place.
No visit on Internet is a coincidence. You have to create your links from other sites (inbound links). You also have to increase the internal linking of your website so that visitors can just hang around in your site. So your first factor for the page rank is the linking of your page. Secondly, pages which attract more users (i.e. number of unique daily users) are obviously more important in the eyes of the search engines. This, being the dependent variable in our equation, grows directly proportional to the in-bound links. So, page rank also increases with the number of unique users. At last, relative, focused content increases the importance of your page (page rank). Initially, every page you add to your site increases the overall page rank of the whole before you start adding in-context hyperlinks; in-context hyperlinks because according to Google authorities, the hyperlinks that you placeinside the content of the page are accepted more valuable. Briefly, on the web, there are no lucky days, no coincidences or no serendipities. If you want traffic on your page, you have to create it yourself. You have to put quality, focused and original content, you have to increase the number of the inbound links. The traffic on your site will increase automatically depending on the other variables. Finally, one day you will look at your site and see that the page rank has jumped from 1 to 4 or even higher. Then you will understand that La vita e bella.
Viral Marketing
November 5th, 2005Viral Marketing is when you give away your own free product or
service that contains your ad copy (contact information, link,
email, etc.) In turn, the recipients are allowed to pass it along
to their own clients, prospect, visitors and others as a freebie.
This is a quick way to multiple your marketing at no extra charge
and without extra effort on your part.
Here are some popular viral marketing techniques to use.
1. Ebooks Share your no cost ebook with your website visitors.
Include a nice full-color ad for your most popular product line
with links to your website and email. Tell recipients to share
copies of the ebook with their own site visitors and other
contacts.
2. Software - Share a trial or lite version of your software
with your website visitors as a freebie. Dont forget to include
that ad for your most popular product line with links to your
website and email. And tell recipients to share copies of the
software with their own site visitors and other contacts. For
help creating software, hire help from online bid sites like
Elance.com.
3. Web Host Offer to host small business web sites on your
server at no charge. In exchange, place your own banner ad at the
top of the site for viral marketing. You can setup a fold for
their site and they can choose their own domain name and have it
redirected to that folder.
4. Templates Design your own website or other templates,
include your own marketing information on them and give them away
as free downloads or an electronic package. Grant permission for
recipients to pass them along. And there you have it more viral
marketing.
5. Articles Write articles about your industry. Include your
website and contact information in the byline. And grant
permission for others to publish as long as they keep the byline
in tact. Then people can use your contact on websites, in ezines,
newsletters and other places where once again, viral marketing
will get spread your name around.
6. Discussion Board- Set up a Discussion Board on your website
with your banner ad attached at the top. And invite others to
link to it and use it for their own sites.
In summary, by using viral marketing strategies, you can reach
out all over the Internet with much less effort. See which
methods work best for you and repeat them as often as
needed.
Outsource
November 5th, 2005Wouldnt it be great to get some good, affordable, reliable help,
even though you work out of your home? But finding workers and
figuring out where to meet or when to bring them into your home
office can pose some difficult juggling, personal and security
issues.
A popular solution is outsourcing. When you outsource, you can
hire experienced people and let them use their creative talents
while you focus on other tasks. Another benefit is that the
workers you hire may be more up to date on the latest information
and technology in their specific fields and can be assets to your
clients, as well, offering improved quality service.
OUTSOURCE
Here are the basics to outsourcing:
Focus:
Focus on outsourcing some of the major tasks of your workload.
First, sit down for a breather and look around your To Do lists
and office area. What CAN you outsource? Which work seems to pile
up the most?
For example, maybe you cant seem to find time to update your
website each month. Maybe your newsletter is STILL not getting
out regularly. Or perhaps your direct mail campaign is not quite
as direct as it should be; i.e. it is sitting directly in the
same pile it was three months ago.
Then write out one-page project description for these major
tasks. Focus on WHAT exactly you would want done, WHEN and HOW the
end product should turned in to you.
Take Action:
Then look for service providers. For example, with the sample
tasks above, find people who can help with Internet websites,
newsletter creation and sending out direct mail campaigns. Call
round and surf the Internet and ask other home based business
operators which companies they recommend. Check forum posts;
inquire for advice and suggestions. Shop around for comparisons.
Then set up trial periods and test a couple. Remember, no one is
perfect. See who you can communicate with pretty easily and whos
flexible to work as a team player. Check out the quality (and
quantity) of their work. Then choose a candidate. Remember, this
decision is not carved in stone. And you can always hire the
other person as a back up or second helper down the road. So be
kind to all who test, make decisions and keep your business
moving forward.
ROI:
Make the most out of your investment and get a great return by
investing in your time wisely, too. Outsourcing will hopefully
free up more time for you to focus on the work you like and allow
more time for marketing and advertising, to increase sales and
projects. Dont forget to brush up on your skills and keep up
with the industry now, too. Read the latest ezines in your field
and take a brush up course or workshop to improve your skills.
Network and seek out joint venture opportunities.
Outsourcing is a great way to help small businesses grow larger
while still remaining at home. So reach out and give it a
try!
